Description
Hiked part of the trail from the dock in Careening Cove to view the Cove, Charlotte Amalie Harbor and Long Bay of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.
Careening Cove is an anchorage on the east side of Hassel Island in the Charlotte Amalie harbor. "Careening" is likely derived from its use as a locale for ship repairing activity in the early 19th century. Hassel Island has a history of piracy and as a military strategic location defending Charlotte Amalie Harbor under Danish, British and American rule.
The island is named after James Hazzell, who purchased the land in 1784.
Presently, the National Park Service owns approximately 92 percent of Hassel Island with a few private homes.
At the time of this photograph I was staying at the sail loft which was later seriously damaged in the 2017 hurricanes Irma and Maria.
